Back to school 2020 is fraught with challenges for parents and school leaders trying to figure out whether, let alone how, children and staff can return to school safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The heightened attention to this communicable virus has reminded us of the importance of having comprehensive management protocols in place in anticipation of public health issues that affect children – including recurring communicable diseases, such as pediculosis (head lice).

We are in an especially critical period in school health history when clear and consistent public health standards must be set and conveyed to all stakeholders, no matter what the disease. At this worrisome time, the NPA’s 2020 National Pediculosis Prevention campaign emphasizes the benefits of combing for managing pediculosis. Like hand washing, combing is a basic hygiene measure. Combing provides a reliable approach for screening, early detection, accurate identification, treatment and prevention of pediculosis. Combing accomplishes what chemicals cannot; it enables families to be self-reliant, proactive, and preventive. NPA’s 2020 campaign offers the first comprehensive list of the benefits of combing.

Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, parents still need to be prepared to control head lice, too often viewed as a nuisance rather than respected as the infectious disease that it is. A proactive mentality builds community trust that parents will take actions to protect children from being unnecessarily vulnerable. Preparedness empowers parents to send their children to school ready to learn and play, and most importantly, free of communicable diseases.

September is National Head lice Prevention Month!

NPA Mission Statement:

The National Pediculosis Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated since 1983 to protecting children, their families and their environment from the misuse and abuse of prescription and over-the-counter pesticide treatments for lice and scabies.

Pediculosis (the medical term for an infestation of lice) provides a public health opportunity to teach important lessons about communicable disease preparedness, responsible personal behaviors, environmental health, and the importance of learning about pharmaceutical remedies before using them on our children and ourselves. The NPA developed and launched the LiceMeister comb in 1997, It is an authentic 510K medical device that revolutionized lice combing worldwide and raised the standard to protect children from unnecessary and direct exposure to pesticides.
